Interpreter / Translator-Jordan National Only – Jordan

The main responsibility of the interpreter/translator is to provide simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation from Arabic into English and vice versa during mental health counselling, physiotherapy and social work sessions in (small) groups or in individual and (small) team meetings or training workshops. As a translator, the main responsibility is to provide translation from English to Arabic and vice versa of clinical session materials, training materials, manuals and other documents.

80% interpretation, 20% translation

A. Main responsibilities:

Interpretation (80%):

  1. Provide simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation from Arabic into English and vice versa during mental health counselling, physiotherapy, social work sessions in (small) groups or individually, team meetings/ staff and training workshops. Simultaneous interpreting occurs while the speaker is still speaking and is typically used in large conferences. Consecutive interpreting occurs after the speaker has paused, usually sentence by sentence, and is best suited to business environments and small meetings. Liaison is typically used for public service, such as in a hospital or legal setting, and the interpreter will check that the listener understands after each sentence.
  2. Facilitate effective communication between two parties (beneficiaries/staff natives proficient in Arabic and non-native international staff and visitors to the organization’s headquarters) who do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language into another (Arabic to English and vice versa).
  3. Facilitate communication for people with limited English proficiency.
  4. Attend individual/group meetings and act as an official interpreter to mediate discussions.

Translation (20%):

  1. Convert written documents from English to Arabic and vice versa, such as clinical session documents, training documents, manuals, research or administrative documents.
  2. Use computer-assisted translation.
  3. Facilitate communication for people with limited English proficiency.

Perform other tasks as assigned by the Clinical Services Coordinator in the implementation of CVT Jordan activities.

B. Minimum criteria:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in translation, English language or related field, with at least two years of proven and professional experience in solid interpreting and translation work.
  2. Knowledge of the humanitarian sector is required. Experience with international organizations is appreciated.

C. Qualifications:

  1. A background in social sciences or psychosocial work experience is preferred.
  2. Native fluency in written and spoken Arabic.
  3. Near-native fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  4. Professional level ability to translate English to Arabic, secondary ability to translate Arabic to English.
  5. Previous translation experience in a non-governmental work environment (language experience in the areas of human rights, mental health and advocacy highly desirable).
  6. Good knowledge of website navigation tools and terminology in Arabic and English.
  7. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  8. Familiar and comfortable with the use of technology as appropriate such as microphones, headphones, telephones, video and the Internet.
  9. Excellent attention to detail and ability to deliver in a timely and accurate manner.
  10. Ability to work independently and in a team.
  11. Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  12. Excellent listening and communication skills
  13. Not afraid to work in somewhat difficult areas.
  14. Flexible and able to adapt to changing conditions, beneficiary needs and program needs.
  15. Able to maintain strict confidentiality.

D. GENERAL CONDITIONS:

  1. Strictly agrees to abide by CVT’s privacy policy and not to disclose any information.
  2. Will do its best to prevent the disclosure by others of any matter of a confidential nature for which it may be or become private by reason of this agreement.
  3. Self-Care: – Regularly attend counseling sessions, debriefings, case conferences and/or supervision meetings to ensure sharing of information and skills.
  4. Establish and follow a personal self-care program to avoid burnout and vicarious trauma.
  5. Recognize and seek help when needed from internal and/or external resources to address secondary trauma concerns in a timely manner.
