Purpose of work

  • The African Court was established under Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights Establishing an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted on 9 June 1998 and entered into force on January 25, 2004. .
  • It is the first continental judicial body responsible for ensuring the protection of human and peoples’ rights. The Court became operational in 2006 and is headquartered in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

Main duties

  • Be responsible for interpretation during sessions and meetings of the Court as well as the translation of Court documents from English or French into Portuguese.

Specific responsibilities

  • Under the general supervision of the Registrar of the Court, and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Registrar, the Interpreter/Translator – Portuguese will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide correct, clear and faithful interpretation from English or French into Portuguese during sessions and meetings of the Court using standard, clear and precise language;
  • Correctly translate documents, mainly from English or French into Portuguese, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and retaining the spirit, context, quality, technical language and nuances of the original version, using precise, clear and appropriate terminology;
  • To carry out this work, the interpreter/translator (Portuguese) must:
    • Check appropriate references to ensure accurate understanding and use of AU technical terminologies;
    • Consult colleagues, authors of texts, specialized technical dictionaries/glossaries, databases, etc.;
    • Keep abreast of developments in the field of languages, both in source and target languages, by compiling and regularly updating specific terminologies, phrases, lexicons, acronyms and special expressions in order to expand vocabulary stock in order to improve skills and ability;
    • Assist in developing AU terminology/lexicon;
    • Provide consecutive interpretation, as required, during hearings and statements at conferences, meetings, discussions, etc.;
  • Accomplish any other task that may be entrusted to him.

Academic requirements and relevant experience
Applicants must have:

Teaching degree:

  • University degree in languages, human sciences or related discipline
  • A professional qualification from a recognized interpreter/translator school.

Professional experience:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively relevant experience in interpretation and translation.
  • Experience working with legal documents is highly desirable.

Duration of appointment:

  • The appointment will be made on the basis of a fixed-term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a trial period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

Remuneration
Indicative base salary of USD 42,879.00 per annum (grade P4, step 1) plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (42% of base salary), housing allowance (1,860 .00 USD per month), education allowance (100% of tuition fees up to a maximum of USD 10,000.00 per child per year up to a maximum of four children aged 21 or less) , spouse’s allowance (5% of base salary), child’s allowance (USD 250 per year per child up to four children aged 21 or less), etc. in accordance with the Rules and Regulations Governing International Civil Servants of the African Union.
